Asset Systems, Inc. has developed an RFID Audit capability for users of AssetWIN 2009. This program provides a much faster means to audit assets than the traditional bar code based approaches. The capability is available immediately.
To implement RFID Audit, asset must be labeled with an EPC Generation 2 asset tag. The system uses a RFID reader to scan the label from a distance of up to 10 feet. RFID technology does not require that the labels are visible so assets with non visible tags or in suitable storage containers will be automatically collected in the process. A single scan can collect data from a number of assets so an office containing dozens of assets can be inventoried in seconds.
“Though we have been monitoring RFID technology for years, it has only been recently that we assessed that it had matured to the point that asset management applications were practical,” noted ASI’s president Alden Snyder. “Indeed, the comparatively high cost of RFID labels and the added hardware cost needed will likely confine RFID to a boutique application for the near term. Nonetheless, we feel that it is important to introduce this technology for clients who face the unique challenges that RFID can so ably solve.”
Use of RFID technology requires that the mobile data collection be equipped with Bluetooth communications and a RFID scanning device. The costs for both the scanning devices and the labels have been declining for years but remain well above traditional bar code costs. For those users whose goals include being RFID ready even if today’s budgets do not allow full implementation, Asset Systems presently offers hardware that will facilitate future implementations.
“While RFID is quite promising, certain technical challenges have limited its widespread use,” said Jeff Penchoff, ASI’s Technology Manager who engineered this new capability. “Discretely reading an individual tag is difficult and influences any deployment. Our approach takes advantage of this characteristic to speed the inventory process. As RFID evolves, we will continue our development.”
